Your eyes do not deceive you; there are (and have been) triple digit days in Las Vegas. Oh, and this week's forecast? It's an actual cool down. It’s hot here, you guys. And we’re barely into June! And when you have a sweat monger like myself all up in the LV heat, you get one thing: B to the O.
Yes, I've used commercial brand deodorants for forever to combat The Stinks. But it doesn't mean I like the idea of putting aluminum on my pits! I don’t care what anyone says, I saw those “aluminum-causes-cancer” chain letters back in the day, and have been freaked out about deodorant ever since.
When I was pregnant with Monkey, I began using Allspice (yes, I said Allspice. For MEN.) because it was the only deodorant that I found at Target that was NOT an antiperspirant and therefore, didn’t contain aluminum in its ingredient list (plus, I stank like a man during that pregnancy, I figured I might as well use men's deodorant…).
Anyway, it worked well and I've been using it ever since. That is, until a month ago. For whatever reason, it stopped working on me and I was left scrambling to find a suitable replacement before the summer really hit. I’ve been using a natural deodorant for the past month, and though it does work, the results only last a few hours. Not gonna cut it. My desperate need for a non-carcinogenic deodorant that works, led me to homemade deodorant.
Homemade Deodorant Recipe
(My original recipe inspiration was by Lindsay at Passionate Homemaking. For the addition of essential oils to the recipe, I used the recipe by Betty at Crunchy Betty)
- 1/4 c Arrowroot (or Cornstarch)
- 1/4 c Baking SODA (NOT baking powder)
- 5 T Coconut Oil (I used organic, unrefined coconut oil)
- 2 - 3 drops Tea Tree Oil (I used six)
- 3 - 5 drops Essential Oil of your choice (I used five drops of lemon e.o.)
- Mix the dry ingredients
- Add coconut oil (no need to melt it!)
- Add essential oils
- Combine all ingredients
- Dispense into container of your choice and you're done!
(OMG, this stuff smells so good! Like dessert! If I could eat my armpits, I would!)
Things To Remember:
1. This is NOT an antiperspirant. You will sweat if you are a sweater
2. It may or may not be "solid" depending on how warm it is in your house. Mine? Runny.
3. Essential oils and baking soda can be irritating/abrasive to some people. Test it on a patch of skin before slathering it under your arms. I've read that some people have had rashes, and worse, skin falling off (!), from using this concoction!
So, I put it on today and I think I might have a winner on my hands. But before I speak too soon, I'll have to get a good week's worth of use in before giving you my final opinion next Monday. Keep your fingers crossed!
